The trees, shrubs and other plants that normally thrive at Daley Ranch don't live forever. Sometimes they die due to the conditions of severe drought, and sometimes they're killed in a wildfire. Some plants, like the monocarpic Yuccas, can live for several years, but then die after their one, spectacular blooming event. These "skeletons" still provide habitats for birds and other animals -- and they remain important and interesting features of the landscape.

(I sure hope they're all cool with the fair use thing.)
